Kilco's Approved disinfectants for use in the control of Avian Infuenza. |
There are many different types of avian influenza that normally reside in wild birds, causing only mild disease. The Avian influenza strain in the news is H5N1, which is described as ‘highly pathogenic’ i.e. it kills a very high proportion of susceptible species.
Avian influenza viruses can be easily transferred between animals on the breath and in droppings. People can also transfer the virus on their clothes and on equipment. It is therefore important to restrict the access to your birds as much as possible.
Visitors and equipment must be cleaned and disinfected and vehicles may need to be cleaned when entering commercial sites. Cleaning is important, as this will remove any dirt containing the virus. No disinfectant will work on a thick layer of dirt!
The DEFRA website also states the following;
‘All people that keep poultry and other domestic birds should remain vigilant for signs of the disease and all keepers should maintain a high level of Biosecurity to reduce the risk of introducing the disease.’
Kilco VIREX can help bird owners, whether domestic or commercial, to reduce the risk of spreading this contagious disease.
VIREX is a powder peroxygen disinfectant that is DEFRA approved against avian influenza at a 1:300 dilution i.e.: 10g in 3 litres of water.
VIREX can be used as a foot or wheel dip and can be sprayed where appropriate.
For vehicle applications, the product can be rinsed off after 10 minutes if required.
VIREX is also available in special soluble sachets. These are usually dissolved in 15 litres of water for foot-dips but can be dissolved in 50 litres of water for specific avian influenza applications.
Footdips are best if made out of plastic and provided with a brush to aid the removal of dirt from boots. Galvanised steel and unsealed concrete surface are not suitable. The solution should be kept out of direct sunlight and prevented from freezing. Loss of colour or the presence of large amounts of dirt mean a new solution is required.
Kilco have other Approved disinfectants which can be used in the control of Avian Influenza.
